TheLordJesushadtwogoodreasonsfornotparticipatinginaworldlyspectaclesuchasjumpingfromthetempleroof.First,suchsensationalismiscaptivetothelawsofdiminishingreturns.Togenerateandholdpeople’sallegiancetoHimmerelybystunningsigns,Jesuswouldhaveneededtoproducegreaterandgreatersigns.Peoplewouldneverhavebeensatisfiedandwouldalwayshavedemandedjustonemoremiracle,oneadditionalshowyevent.Realfaithwouldnothavebeencertain;theywouldhavebeenloversofsensationmorethanGod,whichsimilarlycouldhappentoanyofuswhodon’ttrustGod’salreadyrevealedwill.
Second,andmoreimportant,forJesustoparticipateinsensationalsignswouldhavedemonstratedaprofoundmistrustinHisheavenlyFatherandapresumptuous,faithlesstestingofGod.Butthat’swhatthedevilwantedsothatJesus’sinwouldshatterHisclaimtodivinityandruinhumanity’shopeofsalvation.SuchanactionwouldhavequestionedtheFather’sprovidenceandlove—andthewisdomofHisredemptiveplan.
IfoursinlessSaviorandLordshunnedsensationalism,weasimperfectmenandwomenoughtnevertoliverecklesslyorcarelessly,expectingGodtorescueuswhenwegetintoearthlytroubleorspiritualperil.
